Dry cleaning is when clothes are put into a cleaning solution other than water, but why can't they be cleaned with water? What happens if you spill water on something that is dry clean only?
Answers:
1Water is called the "universal solvent." It will damage very few things unless used carelessly. Some things will spot if drops of water hit them, but you can wash them by completely submerging them and they'll be just fine.
Most woolens, even fine things can be washed carefully by hand in water and Woolite. Just don't use soap. Some washing machines with a gentle cycle, like the Miele front-loader can also do a good job on some "dry-cleanables."
Just be cautious and experiment. The big problem often is not using water, but getting the article back in shape by correctly pressing the item without burning it.

most items can be cleaned with water even though they state dry clean only. Its the soap that causes problems. Some items are sensitive to soap and ingredients added to soap, like optical brightners and oxygen based bleaching agents. They can affect colour and the fabric make up. Using a wool or silk cleaning agent instead of soap will be safe on 99% of dryclean only items. also you should never put dryclean only items in a tumble drier as they will shrink or end up serverly creased. After air drying items they also require an aweful lot of pressing that can't be achieved on a domestic iron.
Drycleaning also removes grease which a cool wash wont do even with powerful emulsifiers.
in a nut shell. washing dryclean only items is risky if you don't have sufficent knowledge, you risk shrinking items and loss of colour. also good luck finishing items, irons will burn if your not careful, they need to be steam pressed.
